Nutcracker as you’ve never seen it before! This Christmas favourite, with Tchaikovsky’s score of ageless delight and perfection, is reimagined by the French choreographer Maurice Bejart, including interpolations both from his own life story and from the star accordioniste Yvette Horner. The ballet itself is seen through the prism of Bejart’s childhood, and is a loving homage to the choreographer’s mother and to his creative hero Marius Petipa. The result is a touching, colourful and physically thrilling realisation.

Italy is the inspiration for some of Tchaikovsky’s most famous melodies. This volume of the NAXOS MUSICAL JOURNEY first transports you to Verona, the city of Shakespeare’s lovers Romeo and Juliet, as evoked in Tchaikovsky’s romantic Fantasy Overture. Visit the dramatic ruins of the Arena, then on to Florence and thrill to the sight of the legendary Duomo or visit the famed Uffizi and Pitti palaces with their art masterworks; wander through the Villa Bonciani, where Tchaikovsky actually lived. In Naples, see the great sculptures of the Archaeological Museum or experience the spectacular view of Vesuvius, across the Bay of Naples. These are the sights and stories of Italy conjured in the timeless music of Tchaikovsky.

Recorded at the Bolshoi Theatre in 1989.Tchaikovsky’s ballet The Nutcracker, which was written in 1891, premiered in St. Petersburg in 1892 and first performed at the Bolshoi Theatre Moscow in 1919, shows no sign of losing its hold as the No. 1 Christmas ballet. It is based on the fairytale The Nutcracker and the King of Mice written by E.T.A. Hoffman and tells the story of the young girl Clara, who dreams of a Nutcracker Prince and a fierce battle against a Mouse King with seven heads. The ballet is a fantastic tale presented in the choreography of Yuri Grigorovich. It is filled with beautiful music – the Waltz of the Snow flakes and the pas de deux of Sugar-Plum Fairy and Prince have become immortal – as well as enchanting costumes and a fabulous setting at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow.
