Returning to Wembley as FA Cup holders, and facing League runners-up Burnley, Spurs were aiming to emulate Newcastle’s feat a decade earlier by winning the Cup in successive seasons.Known sometimes as the Chessboard Final – the match developed into a fascinating battle of wills and tactics, as the two familiar adversaries locked horns once again, and Spurs struck an early blow through the brilliance of Greaves, who stopped deftly to swivel and place his shot past Blacklaw in the Burnley goal.Burnley equalised shortly after the interval through Jimmy Robson, who had the distinction of scoring the 100th FA Cup final goal. Finishing the season in sixth, it was remarkably the Club’s lowest position for 27 years, but in Graeme Souness’ first full season in charge, the faithful Kop were not too despondent at the prospect of The FA Cup heading back to Anfield.Facing second division Sunderland, who had upset the formbook in 1973 when they toppled Don Revie’s Leeds United, Liverpool were odds-on favourites to clinch The FA Cup for a fantastic fifth time. But a testing first half lay ahead and the scoreline remained deadlocked as the half-time whistle sounded.However, the second half proved to be a completely different story, and with only two minutes played the break-through came, as Steve McManaman’s cross fell to Michael Thomas who smashed the ball home with clinical aplomb, and maybe just maybe he was forgiven for that injury time goal for Arsenal in 1989 that denied the Reds of yet another league title and domestic double.One soon became two, and it was goalscorer who turned provider. Thomas latched onto Saunders’ through ball, rounded the keeper and rolled it into the path of Ian Rush who tucked it past Norman in the Sunderland goal, for his fifth and record breaking FA Cup Final goal.It was the season that marked the Club’s return to European football for the first time since 1985, and it was business as usual as another piece of silverware headed for the Anfield trophy cabinet.
